NFL Players Set to Participate in Flag Football at the 2028 Summer Olympics

NFL players have received official clearance to participate in flag football, which will make its debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics. However, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes appears unlikely to take part, according to comments relayed by Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com. During their recent spring meetings in Minneapolis, NFL owners unanimously approved the participation of players in the Olympic event, as reported by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
While Mahomes has expressed reservations about joining Team USA for the flag football squad at the Olympics, his concerns are understandable. The risk of injury during the Olympic Games could pose a significant threat to his ongoing career with the Chiefs. Nonetheless, Team USA will have an array of elite quarterbacks to choose from, as other notable names from the NFL show interest in competing.
Among those expressing enthusiasm for the Olympic opportunity is Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, the reigning Super Bowl champion. Hurts was featured in an advertisement announcing flag football's inclusion in the Los Angeles Games and has remarked on the honor of representing Team USA. "I know it'd be a great honor to be able to represent and have the opportunity to have a gold medal," he stated in a press conference leading up to the Super Bowl, according to an article by Lena Smirnova for olympics.com. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has also commented on the matter, calling the prospect an "exciting opportunity," while acknowledging potential conflicts with training camp and other obligations. With Mahomes seeming to step back, Hurts and Burrow, among others, could potentially step into the spotlight as flag football gears up for its Olympic debut.
