NFL Players Cleared for 2028 Olympics Debut in Flag Football, but Mahomes Likely Out

NFL players have received clearance to participate in flag football when the sport makes its debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics. However, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes seems unlikely to contribute to Team USA, as indicated by comments from Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com. NFL owners unanimously approved the participation of players during their spring meetings held in Minneapolis last week, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Despite the opportunity, Mahomes has expressed reservations about joining the flag football squad. His concerns are understandable, particularly given the potential risks associated with competing in the Olympics while he continues his career with the Chiefs. While Mahomes may not be available for selection, Team USA will likely have access to a pool of elite quarterbacks within the NFL who could fill the role.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, the reigning Super Bowl champion, has expressed interest in representing the United States in flag football. Hurts, who was featured in an advertisement promoting the sport's Olympic debut at the Los Angeles Games, stated in a press conference leading up to the Super Bowl, 'I don't know if there's anything official. If we'd be able to participate, but I know it'd be a great honor to be able to represent and have the opportunity to have a gold medal.' Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has also shown interest, noting that while he is excited about the opportunity, he is uncertain how it would fit into the existing training camp obligations. As flag football approaches its Olympic debut, the absence of Mahomes may open doors for other talented quarterbacks such as Hurts and Burrow.
