NFL Players May Compete in Flag Football at the 2028 Summer Olympics

NFL players have been granted permission to participate in flag football, set to make its debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics. However, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes appears unlikely to represent Team USA, according to comments reported by Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com. At the recent spring meetings held in Minneapolis, NFL owners unanimously approved player participation in the Olympic games, as noted by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Mahomes has previously expressed hesitancy about joining the Team USA flag football squad for the Olympics. His concerns are understandable, particularly considering the potential for injury during the tournament while he continues his career with the Chiefs. Although Mahomes may not be a candidate, Team USA is expected to have a wealth of elite quarterbacks available for selection from the NFL roster.
Among those interested are Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and reigning Super Bowl champion Jalen Hurts, who featured in an advertisement promoting flag football's Olympic debut at the Los Angeles Games. Hurts has voiced his excitement about representing the United States, stating, 'It'd be a great honor to be able to represent and have the opportunity to have a gold medal.' Similarly, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has indicated his willingness to participate, acknowledging the complexities of balancing training camp obligations but expressing enthusiasm for the opportunity.
