NFL Players Cleared for Flag Football at the 2028 Olympics, but Mahomes Likely Out

NFL players have received official clearance to participate in flag football when the sport makes its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games. However, it appears that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes may opt out of the opportunity, as indicated by remarks relayed by Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com. The decision for player participation was unanimously approved by NFL owners during spring meetings held in Minneapolis last week, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Patrick Mahomes has previously expressed reservations about joining the Team USA flag football squad for the Olympics. His hesitation is understandable given the potential risks associated with participating in international competition, particularly as he continues to focus on his career with the Chiefs. Although Mahomes may not be among the candidates for the flag football team, the selection process will still include a pool of elite quarterbacks from the NFL.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and reigning Super Bowl champion Jalen Hurts, who has already been spotlighted in an advertisement promoting the flag football event at the Los Angeles Games, has shown interest in the opportunity. During a press conference leading up to the Super Bowl, Hurts commented on the honor of representing the United States and the chance to win a gold medal. Additionally, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow expressed excitement about the potential participation, acknowledging the challenges of balancing training camp obligations. While Mahomes may sit this one out, Hurts and Burrow, among others, could represent the NFL as flag football approaches its Olympic debut.
