NFL Players Cleared for 2028 Olympics Flag Football Participation

The National Football League (NFL) has confirmed that players will have the opportunity to participate in flag football during its debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics. However, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes appears to be opting out of the event, as reported by Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com. NFL owners unanimously approved the inclusion of players in the Olympics during their spring meetings held in Minneapolis last week, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
While Mahomes has indicated he may not join the Team USA flag football roster, his stance is understandable. The prospect of injury during the Games poses a risk as he continues to navigate his career with the Chiefs. Nonetheless, even without Mahomes in the mix, Team USA is likely to draw from a pool of elite quarterbacks from the NFL.
Notable figures such as Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and reigning Super Bowl champion Jalen Hurts have shown interest in representing the United States in this new Olympic sport. Hurts, who featured in an advertisement for flag football's introduction at the Los Angeles Games, expressed enthusiasm about the potential opportunity at a press conference. Additionally, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow also conveyed excitement at the prospect, acknowledging the potential scheduling conflicts with training camp obligations. As flag football prepares for its Olympic debut, other quarterbacks may step up in Mahomes' absence, with Hurts and Burrow among the potential candidates.
