NFL Players Cleared for Olympic Flag Football, Mahomes Likely Out

NFL players have received clearance to participate in flag football, which will make its debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics. However, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is unlikely to be among those participating, according to comments relayed by Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com. NFL owners unanimously approved the eligibility of players to take part in the Olympic Games during their spring meetings held in Minneapolis last week, as reported by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Mahomes has previously expressed reservations about joining Team USA's flag football squad for the Olympics. His decision is understandable, considering the potential risks associated with injury while competing, especially as he continues his career with the Chiefs. While Mahomes may opt out, Team USA will still have the opportunity to select from a pool of elite quarterbacks available in the NFL.
Among those potentially in contention is Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and reigning Super Bowl champion Jalen Hurts, who participated in an advertisement announcing flag football's Olympic debut at the Los Angeles Games. Hurts has expressed interest in representing the United States, stating at a press conference prior to the Super Bowl that it would be a great honor to have the opportunity to compete for a gold medal, similar to athletes in other sports. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has also shown enthusiasm, acknowledging the excitement of the opportunity while considering the implications for training camp and his obligations. As the flag football event approaches, with Mahomes likely out, both Hurts and Burrow could be strong candidates for Team USA.
