NFL Players Cleared for Flag Football at the 2028 Summer Olympics, but Patrick Mahomes May Sit Out

NFL players have received official clearance to participate in flag football when the sport makes its debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics. However, it appears that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes may not be among those participating, according to remarks shared by Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com. During recent spring meetings held in Minneapolis, NFL owners unanimously approved the participation of players in the Olympics, as reported by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Mahomes has previously expressed reservations about being considered for the Team USA flag football squad at the Olympics. His decision is understandable, especially given the potential risk of injury as he continues his career with the Chiefs. While Mahomes may opt out, Team USA still boasts a range of talented quarterbacks from the NFL who could effectively represent the nation in flag football.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and reigning Super Bowl champion Jalen Hurts has indicated his interest in participating. Featured in an advertisement promoting flag football's inclusion at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Hurts stated during a Super Bowl press conference, "I don't know if there's anything official. If we'd be able to participate, but I know it'd be a great honor to be able to represent and have the opportunity to have a gold medal." Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has also shown enthusiasm for the Olympic opportunity, noting the excitement it presents but acknowledging the potential challenges it could pose with training camp obligations.
