NFL Players Cleared for Flag Football at 2028 Summer Olympics, Mahomes May Sit Out

NFL players have received approval to participate in flag football when the sport makes its debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics. However, it appears that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes may not be among those competing, according to comments relayed by Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com.
The decision for NFL players to take part in the Olympics was unanimously approved by NFL owners during their spring meetings held in Minneapolis last week, as reported by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Mahomes has expressed reservations about his potential involvement with the Team USA flag football squad, citing concerns about the risk of injury while he continues his NFL career with the Chiefs.
Although Mahomes may not be in the running for a spot on the team, there are several elite quarterbacks within the league who could be considered. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and reigning Super Bowl champion Jalen Hurts has indicated interest in representing the United States. In a recent press conference leading up to the Super Bowl, Hurts remarked, "I don't know if there's anything official. If we'd be able to participate but I know it'd be a great honor to be able to represent and have the opportunity to have a gold medal." Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has also expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, stating, "That's an exciting opportunity... But that's something I would like to do for sure." As the Olympic debut of flag football approaches, it remains to be seen who will ultimately don the Team USA uniform.
