NFL Players Cleared for Flag Football at 2028 Summer Olympics

NFL players have received official clearance to participate in flag football when the sport makes its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games. However, it appears that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will not be among those competing, according to comments relayed by Matt Derrick from ChiefsDigest.com.
During their recent spring meetings in Minneapolis, NFL owners unanimously approved the participation of players in the Olympics, as reported by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Mahomes has previously expressed hesitance regarding his involvement with the Team USA flag football squad. His decision is understandable given the potential risk of injury, especially as he continues to focus on his career with the Chiefs. Even though Mahomes may step aside, the pool of talent available to Team USA includes several elite quarterbacks from the NFL.
One prominent candidate for the flag football team is Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and reigning Super Bowl champion Jalen Hurts. Hurts, who participated in an advertisement promoting flag football's Olympic inclusion, has indicated his willingness to represent the United States. "I don't know if there's anything official," Hurts stated at a press conference prior to the Super Bowl. "But I know it'd be a great honor to be able to represent and have the opportunity to have a gold medal." Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has also shown interest, acknowledging the challenge of balancing such a commitment with training camp obligations. "That's an exciting opportunity. I'm not entirely sure how that would work out with training camp and all of our obligations here," Burrow commented. As the Olympic debut of flag football approaches, it seems that while Mahomes may opt out, others like Hurts and Burrow could be eager to join the national team.
