NFL Players Cleared for Flag Football at 2028 Olympics, Mahomes Likely Out

NFL players have been granted permission to participate in flag football when the sport makes its debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics. However, it seems that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will not be among those representing Team USA, as indicated by comments reported by Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com.
During their spring meetings in Minneapolis last week, NFL owners unanimously approved the participation of players in the Olympic event, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Mahomes has previously expressed uncertainty about joining the Team USA flag football squad for the Olympic games, citing concerns over the potential risks associated with competing, especially as he continues his career with the Chiefs. While Mahomes may not be a contender, Team USA is likely to have an array of talented quarterbacks to choose from within the league.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and reigning Super Bowl champion Jalen Hurts has expressed interest in the opportunity. In an advertisement promoting the inclusion of flag football in the Los Angeles Games, Hurts remarked on the significance of representing one's country. 'I don't know if there's anything official. If we'd be able to participate but I know it'd be a great honor to be able to represent and have the opportunity to have a gold medal,' he said. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow also showed enthusiasm about the event, stating, 'That's an exciting opportunity. I'm not entirely sure how that would work out with training camp and all of our obligations here, but that's something I would like to do for sure.' As flag football approaches its Olympic debut, Mahomes appears to be out, while Hurts, Burrow, and others may be positioned to step in.
