NFL Players Clear to Compete in Flag Football at 2028 Summer Olympics

NFL players have received clearance to participate in flag football when the sport makes its debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics. However, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes may not be a participant, as reported by Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com. NFL owners unanimously approved player participation in the Olympics during their spring meetings in Minneapolis last week, as noted by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Mahomes has previously indicated that he may not be interested in joining the Team USA flag football roster at the upcoming Games. His reasoning is understandable, considering the potential risks of injury as he continues his career with the Chiefs. While Mahomes might step aside, Team USA is expected to have a depth of elite quarterbacks to choose from throughout the NFL.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and reigning Super Bowl champion Jalen Hurts has expressed interest in representing the United States. Hurts, who was featured in an advertisement announcing the debut of flag football at the Los Angeles Games, remarked that it would be a significant honor to have the opportunity to compete for a gold medal. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow also conveyed enthusiasm about the potential for participation, though he acknowledged the challenge of balancing training camp obligations with Olympic commitments. As the Olympic debut of flag football approaches, it appears that Hurts and Burrow may be among those who could represent Team USA.
