NFL Players Clear to Compete in Flag Football at 2028 Olympics, but Mahomes to Sit Out

NFL players have received official clearance to participate in flag football at the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics. However, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes appears unlikely to take part, according to comments relayed by Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com. During their recent spring meetings in Minneapolis, NFL owners unanimously approved this opportunity for players, as reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Previously, Mahomes expressed hesitance regarding his involvement with Team USA's flag football squad for the Olympic event. His reservations are understandable; participating poses a risk of injury, especially as he continues to focus on his career with the Chiefs. While Mahomes may not be in contention, the selection for Team USA could include other prominent quarterbacks from the NFL, such as Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Hurts, the reigning Super Bowl champion, was featured in the promotional advertisement for flag football's inclusion at the Los Angeles Games. In a press conference leading up to the Super Bowl, he noted, 'I don't know if there's anything official. If we'd be able to participate but I know it'd be a great honor to be able to represent and have the opportunity to have a gold medal.' Additionally, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow expressed interest in the possibility, stating that while he is unsure how the schedule would align with training camp, participating would be something he would like to pursue. As flag football nears its Olympic debut, the landscape for potential Team USA players could feature several elite quarterbacks.
