Raiders Jeanty Adjusts Running Back Stance Under Coaching Guidance

Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly recently addressed changes in rookie running back Ashton Jeanty's backfield stance, a suggestion made by running backs coach Deland McCullough. During a press conference, Kelly emphasized that he does not dictate stances within the team, stating, 'I didn't tell anybody on this team to be in any stances because I don't coach positions.'
Ashton Jeanty previously revealed that Kelly first approached him about modifying his stance during rookie minicamp. Referring to a conversation from May 19, Jeanty shared that Kelly inquired whether he had played basketball, to which Jeanty confirmed his experience, even mentioning his ability to dunk. Jeanty recounted Kelly's playful demonstration, where Kelly simulated holding a basketball and asked how Jeanty would guard him. This interaction led to Kelly advising Jeanty about the necessity of a proper running back stance.
Jeanty, who was selected by the Raiders with the sixth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after an impressive collegiate career at Boise State, noted the intention to adapt his stance in accordance with the coaching staff's recommendations. Despite embracing this change, Jeanty indicated that he might revisit his previous stance after demonstrating his skills on the field. Having completed a standout junior season in 2024, where he amassed 2,601 rushing yards and scored 30 total touchdowns, Jeanty aims to be a valuable contributor to a Raiders offense that struggled with the league's worst rushing attack last season. Kelly expressed confidence in Jeanty's potential versatility, highlighting his coachable nature and the various roles he can assume in the team's offense.
