NFL Players Cleared for Flag Football in 2028 Olympics, but Mahomes Might Sit Out

NFL players have been granted permission to partake in flag football during its inaugural appearance at the 2028 Summer Olympics. However, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has indicated that he may not participate, as reported by Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com. This decision comes in light of the NFL owners' unanimous approval for players to engage in the Olympics during their recent spring meetings held in Minneapolis, as noted by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Mahomes has previously expressed reservations about being a part of Team USA's flag football team at the Olympic Games. His hesitance is understandable, considering the potential risks of injury while he continues to advance his career with the Chiefs. Although Mahomes may exclude himself from the roster, Team USA will likely have access to a wealth of elite quarterbacks from within the league.
Notably, Jalen Hurts, the quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles and reigning Super Bowl champion, is expressing interest in the opportunity. Hurts was highlighted in an advertisement announcing flag football's debut at the Los Angeles Games and has remarked on the honor of representing the nation. He stated at a press conference, 'I don't know if there's anything official. If we'd be able to participate but I know it'd be a great honor to be able to represent and have the opportunity to have a gold medal.' Additionally, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has also shown enthusiasm for the prospect, although he acknowledged the logistical challenges with training camp obligations, saying, 'That's an exciting opportunity. I'm not entirely sure how that would work out with training camp and all of our obligations here, but that's something I would like to do for sure.' As the Olympics approach, while Mahomes may be stepping back, both Hurts and Burrow are keen on the idea of participating in flag football.
