Damian Lillard Returns to Portland Trail Blazers on Three-Year Deal

Damian Lillard has officially returned to the Portland Trail Blazers, stating that it 'never felt right' for him to be away from the franchise. The veteran guard agreed to a three-year, $42 million contract with a player option for the 2027-28 season during the offseason, culminating in an introductory press conference on Monday. Lillard emphasized the importance of unity in making his return possible, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to come back even while recovering from an injury.
Selected as the sixth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, Lillard quickly established himself as a cornerstone for the Trail Blazers, becoming arguably the best player in the team's history over his 11 seasons. His illustrious career includes being named the 2012-13 NBA Rookie of the Year, accumulating seven All-NBA selections, making nine All-Star appearances, and earning a spot on the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team. Lillard holds the distinction of being the franchise's all-time leader in points, three-pointers, and free throws, among other records, and played a pivotal role in leading the team to the 2019 Western Conference Finals.
Having spent the past two seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, Lillard's remarks on Monday indicated a deep personal connection to Portland, suggesting that he left a part of himself in the city. Unfortunately for Trail Blazers fans, there may be a wait to see him return to the court, as he is currently rehabilitating a torn Achilles sustained during the Bucks' playoff run. Head coach Chauncey Billups expressed confidence in Lillard's recovery, stating, 'He'll be back as good as ever, if you know anything about him.' Additionally, Lillard revealed discussions with fellow athletes Aaron Rodgers, Kevin Durant, and Rudy Gay regarding the journey of overcoming Achilles injuries, emphasizing his mental fortitude in facing such challenges: 'If it's a mental battle, I don't lose those.' With the unwavering support of a fanbase that holds him in high regard, Lillard embarks on a new chapter as he aims to reclaim his position as a star for the Trail Blazers.
