Damian Lillard Returns to His Roots with Portland Trail Blazers

Damian Lillard has officially returned to the Portland Trail Blazers, a move he indicated was long overdue. During an introductory press conference on Monday, Lillard expressed gratitude for the opportunity to come back to a team he considers his basketball home. He signed a three-year, $42 million contract that includes a player option for the 2027-28 season. "For this to even be possible, we all had to be on the same page," Lillard stated, emphasizing that it never felt right to be away from Portland, especially after experiencing injuries.
Lillard has been a significant figure in the Trail Blazers organization since being selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. Over his 11 seasons with the franchise, he established himself as one of the greatest players in team history. His accolades include the 2012-13 Rookie of the Year award, seven All-NBA selections, nine All-Star appearances, and a spot on the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team. Lillard also holds the franchise records for points, three-pointers, and free throws, not to mention playing a key role in leading the team to the Western Conference Finals in 2019.
Having recently spent the past two seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, Lillard's comments on returning to Portland underscored a strong sense of belonging. However, Trail Blazers fans may have to be patient before seeing him back on the court, as he is currently recovering from a torn Achilles sustained during Milwaukee's playoff run. Lillard's focus in the early part of his new contract will be on rehabilitation. Head coach Chauncey Billups expressed confidence in Lillard's recovery, stating, "He'll be back as good as ever, if you know anything about him." Lillard revealed that he has sought advice from fellow athletes who have recovered from similar injuries, stating, "If it's a mental battle, I don't lose those. If it's physical, it's possible. But mental battles I don't lose." Lillard's determination, coupled with the unwavering support of the Trail Blazers' fanbase, will be crucial as he aims to make a triumphant return to the court.
