NFL Players Cleared for Flag Football Participation in 2028 Olympics, Mahomes Likely Out

NFL players have received clearance to participate in flag football when the sport makes its debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics. However, it appears that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will not be among those vying for a spot on the Team USA roster, according to remarks by Matt Derrick from ChiefsDigest.com. Last week, during their spring meetings in Minneapolis, NFL owners unanimously approved the participation of players in the Olympics, as reported by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Mahomes has previously indicated that he may not pursue a position on the Olympic flag football team. His reasoning is clear, given the potential risk of injury while representing the United States, especially as he continues his career with the Chiefs. While Mahomes may not be in contention, Team USA is likely to have access to several elite quarterbacks from the NFL.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and reigning Super Bowl champion Jalen Hurts has expressed interest in the opportunity. In a press conference leading up to the Super Bowl, Hurts mentioned, 'I don't know if there's anything official. If we'd be able to participate but I know it'd be a great honor to be able to represent and have the opportunity to have a gold medal.' Additionally, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has also shown enthusiasm. Burrow stated, 'That's an exciting opportunity. I'm not entirely sure how that would work out with training camp and all of our obligations here, but that's something I would like to do for sure.' As the Olympic debut of flag football approaches, it appears that Hurts and Burrow, among others, could represent Team USA.
