New York Knicks Secure Mikal Bridges with Significant Contract Extension

The New York Knicks have finalized a four-year, $150 million contract extension with forward Mikal Bridges, as confirmed by his agents Sam Goldfeder and Jordan Gertler. The agreement includes a player option for the 2029-30 season and features a trade kicker.
Prior to this extension, some NBA executives speculated that Bridges might have opted to play the upcoming season on an expiring contract in hopes of approaching a $200 million valuation in the free-agent market next summer. However, this deal indicates that the Knicks have a long-term strategy in mind for Bridges, solidifying his position within the team after his acquisition from the Brooklyn Nets on June 25, 2024. The Knicks traded a substantial number of draft picks to obtain Bridges, who subsequently joined his former Villanova teammates Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart. Notably, Donte DiVincenzo was traded shortly thereafter along with Julius Randle to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Karl-Anthony Towns.
Bridges, 28, previously had two seasons remaining on a four-year, $90.9 million contract he signed with the Phoenix Suns in October 2021, before being traded to the Nets as part of the deal that sent Kevin Durant to Phoenix in February 2023. During the 2023-24 season, Bridges emerged as the leading scorer for the Nets, averaging 19.6 points, alongside significant contributions in rebounds and assists. His performance showcased his capabilities as a strong defensive player, aligning with the Knicks' gritty playing style. Throughout the 2024-25 season, he further elevated his game, contributing to the team’s success on their path to the Eastern Conference Finals—New York's first appearance in that stage since 2000. Additionally, Bridges has established a reputation as one of the most durable players in the league, having never missed a game in his seven-year career, while averaging substantial minutes per game. Despite inconsistencies at times, Bridges proved vital during the Knicks' playoff victories, earning recognition for his clutch performances. However, he faced criticism for his contributions in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers, a series that some analysts described as below expectations for the player. Nevertheless, Bridges’ presence has undoubtedly contributed to making the Knicks a formidable contender in pursuit of a championship, marking a significant moment in the franchise's journey.
