Mikal Bridges and Knicks Agree to Contract Extension

The New York Knicks and wing Mikal Bridges have finalized a four-year contract extension worth $150 million, as confirmed by agents Sam Goldfeder and Jordan Gertler. The agreement includes a player option for the 2029-30 season and features a trade kicker. Prior to this deal, league executives speculated that Bridges might opt to play the upcoming season on an expiring contract with the aim of securing a more lucrative contract on the open market next summer.
This extension follows earlier reports that indicated Bridges had been involved in trade discussions. The Knicks acquired him from the Brooklyn Nets on June 25, 2024, in exchange for an extensive collection of draft picks. This transaction also marked a reunion with former Villanova teammates Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart, although Donte DiVincenzo was subsequently traded three months later, alongside Julius Randle, to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a deal for Karl-Anthony Towns. Prior to being traded to the Knicks, Bridges had two years and $48.2 million remaining on a previous contract he signed with the Phoenix Suns in October 2021.
Bridges had established himself as a key player for the Nets during the 2023-24 season, averaging 19.6 points on 43.6 percent shooting, including 37.2 percent from three-point range. He also contributed 4.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1 steal per game. Noted for his defensive prowess, Bridges fit seamlessly into the Knicks' strategy. In the following season, he averaged 17.6 points on 50.0 percent shooting, helping guide New York to its first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 2000. Further distinguishing himself, Bridges has never missed a game in his seven-year career, averaging 35.8 minutes on the floor over the last three seasons. However, he acknowledged moments of inconsistency in his performance, striving to find better rhythm within the team. Despite facing challenges, Bridges played a vital role in the Knicks' playoff victories over the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics, although his performance in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers was met with some critique for being below expectations. Nonetheless, Bridges' commitment to the Knicks solidifies his position as a significant contributor to a team that is positioning itself as a legitimate championship contender.
