Knicks Secure Mikal Bridges with Long-Term Contract Extension

The New York Knicks have reached an agreement with wing Mikal Bridges on a four-year contract extension worth $150 million. The extension, negotiated by agents Sam Goldfeder and Jordan Gertler, includes a player option for the 2029-30 season and features a trade kicker.
This agreement follows speculation among NBA executives that Bridges could potentially play on an expiring contract during the upcoming season, thereby positioning himself closer to a $200 million contract when entering free agency next summer. The Knicks acquired Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets on June 25, 2024, in exchange for a substantial package of draft picks. This move reunites Bridges with former Villanova teammates Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Donte DiVincenzo, the latter of whom was traded three months later to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a deal that sent Julius Randle and others in exchange for Karl-Anthony Towns.
Bridges, who previously had two seasons and $48.2 million remaining on a four-year, $90.9 million contract signed with the Phoenix Suns in October 2021, was traded to the Nets as part of the deal that sent Kevin Durant to Phoenix in February 2023. The Knicks' acquisition of Bridges suggests a long-term vision for the franchise, aligning him with Towns and his fellow Villanova alumni as a core group moving forward. During the 2023-24 season, Bridges emerged as the Nets' primary scoring option, averaging 19.6 points per game with a shooting percentage of 43.6, including 37.2% from three-point range, along with 4.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists. His performance, particularly as a dynamic defensive player, proved essential to the Knicks' success during their playoff runs, culminating in an Eastern Conference Finals appearance—the franchise's first since 2000. However, Bridges acknowledged moments of inconsistency in his performance, indicating a desire to improve and find better rhythm within the team. Despite a challenging series against the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals, Mikal Bridges remains a vital part of a Knicks team that appears to be a strong contender for a championship.
