Klay Thompson Excited About Mavericks' Potential with Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis

Thompson Praises Teammates and Foresees a Bright Future for Mavericks
Dallas Mavericks star Klay Thompson is brimming with enthusiasm about the team's direction as they move forward with him, Kyrie Irving, and Anthony Davis taking key roles. During his appearance on the Showtime With Michael Cooper podcast, Thompson heaped praise on Davis, calling him "the best power forward, maybe of my generation," and "a two-way force."
Thompson emphasized Davis's unique skill set, noting, "There's not many big men who can do what he does as far as his handle, his blocking-shot ability and his jump shot." He believes that when fully healthy, the Mavericks boast the best frontcourt in the NBA.
On the subject of Irving, Thompson expressed relief that he no longer has to face the dynamic guard on the court, stating, "He's the toughest guy I've ever guarded." He put Irving in elite company, comparing him to basketball legends like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Kobe Bryant, highlighting that "he's got no weaknesses in his game." Thompson reminisced about Game 5 of the 2016 NBA Finals when Irving scored 41 points, leading the Cavaliers' historic comeback against the Warriors.
However, there are concerns for the Mavericks as Irving is currently recovering from a torn ACL, with the possibility of missing the entire 2025-26 season. If he does return, the All-Star break may be the earliest he might suit up again. Once the team is at full strength, the Mavericks are sure to be a formidable opponent.
In the podcast, host Michael Cooper prompted Thompson to name the best shooters, past and present. For active players, Thompson cited names like Warriors star Stephen Curry, Rockets' Kevin Durant, himself, Suns' Devin Booker, and faced a dilemma choosing between Lakers' Luka Dončić, Trail Blazers' Damian Lillard, and Irving.
Reflecting on all-time greats, Thompson included Curry, Reggie Miller, Ray Allen, Larry Bird, and himself in the discussion. With Thompson, Curry, Miller, and Allen all ranking in the top six for all-time three-pointers made, and Bird known for his 37.6 percent shooting from beyond the arc along with three Three-Point Contest wins, his selections resonate with strong arguments.
