Dennis Schröder Faces Racial Abuse During Germany's Impressive EuroBasket Win

Schröder’s Stand Against Racism at EuroBasket 2025
In a significant EuroBasket 2025 matchup held in Tampere, Finland, German national team guard Dennis Schröder, who also plays for the Sacramento Kings, was subjected to racial abuse during Germany's commanding 107-88 victory over Lithuania on Saturday. This incident has sparked widespread condemnation across the basketball community.
According to reports from the Associated Press, two fans were ejected from the game following video evidence that confirmed their participation in the racial abuse. One of the individuals has received a ban from attending the remainder of the tournament. Schröder addressed the situation post-game, stating, "Making monkey noises, that's something I don't respect. No matter what status, insults, that's all fine. But racism simply doesn't belong in this sport. That's something that's not OK."
FIBA, the international basketball federation, also issued a statement condemning the behavior, asserting: "FIBA unequivocally condemns hate speech, discriminatory conduct, and racist language in any form. Creating an inclusive, respectful, and safe environment for players, teams, and fans remains a fundamental priority of our sport." They have provided all relevant footage and information to local law enforcement, who are investigating the matter further.
Despite the adverse situation, Schröder shone on the court by leading all scorers with 26 points on 9-of-18 shooting, while also contributing six assists, four steals, and three rebounds. Schröder, who recently signed a three-year, $44.43 million contract with the Kings, is gearing up to enter his 13th NBA season in 2025-26. Since being drafted 17th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in 2013, he has had a diverse career, playing for several teams including the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors, and most recently the Brooklyn Nets, Warriors, and Pistons last season.
Following this victory, Germany's record at EuroBasket stands at 3-0, placing them at the top of Group B. The team has already secured a spot in the Round of 16 regardless of their performance in the remaining group games. Schröder and the German squad are set to face Great Britain on Monday, followed by a match against host Finland on Wednesday.
