Intrigue Surrounds NFL Wide Receivers for 2028 Olympics Flag Football

The wide receiver position in the NFL is generating significant interest surrounding the potential participation of players in the flag football competition at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Notably, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase has emerged as a prominent candidate to represent the United States, provided he chooses to participate. Chase expressed uncertainty regarding the opportunity, stating, "I don't know. I want to hear more information about it. I want to know the timing for us, offseason, in season. I want to know if we're getting paid. I want to know where we are traveling every other week or every day; all that plays a part, because we have an offseason, we have a life. How long would that be? I don't know. There are a lot of questions to it. I think it's pretty cool, but I'm not really 100% on it yet."
While the NFL has announced that players will be permitted to participate, there are differing opinions regarding whether current NFL players should automatically secure roster spots on the Olympic team. Darrell Doucette III, who played quarterback for Team USA's men’s national flag football team, emphasized the dedication of existing players to the sport, stating, "This is a sport that we've played for a long time, and we feel like we are the best at it and we don't need other guys. But we all have one goal in mind, and that's to represent our country. We're definitely open to all competition. If those guys come in and excel and they're better than us, hats off to them. Go win that gold medal for our country."
Responses from various NFL wide receivers regarding the idea of Olympic participation showcase a range of enthusiasm. A.J. Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles announced he would not participate, citing the overlap with training camp, while Minnesota Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson expressed that winning a gold medal for his country would be a "dream." Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins appeared excited about the prospect. While prominent NFL receivers are in the spotlight, some current collegiate athletes such as Jeremiah Smith from Ohio State and Ryan Williams from Alabama are also positioned to compete for a spot in the Olympics. Williams articulated a strong interest in pursuing the opportunity, stating he would be "one-thousand percent" interested in representing his country. Conversely, Chase remains indecisive, not entirely ruling out the possibility of Olympic participation.
