Ashton Jeanty Adjusts His Stance Under Coaching Guidance

Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly addressed recent adjustments made by rookie running back Ashton Jeanty regarding his backfield stance, clarifying that he did not instruct any player on specific stances. Kelly emphasized his role by stating, 'I didn't tell anybody on this team to be in any stances because I don't coach positions.'
During an earlier interview on May 19, Jeanty recounted his initial interaction with Kelly at rookie minicamp. Jeanty, who played basketball in addition to football, was approached by Kelly who asked him to demonstrate a defensive stance as if he were guarding him. This exchange led to Kelly explaining the importance of having an appropriate running back stance, stating to Jeanty, 'That's exactly why you have to be down in your running back stance.' Jeanty, selected as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after an impressive college career at Boise State, was noted for his upright posture during his time with the Broncos.
Following the coaching staff’s request, Jeanty confirmed he would modify his stance but remained optimistic about potentially reverting. 'I have to earn my stripes and make some plays first, but I don't think it's going to be the end [of the stance],' Jeanty mentioned. After concluding a standout junior season in 2024, where he finished second in Heisman Trophy voting, Jeanty led the nation with 2,601 rushing yards and 30 total touchdowns, averaging an impressive 7.0 yards per carry. Kelly expressed commendation for Jeanty, highlighting his coachable nature and versatility on the field, suggesting that the young running back could excel in various roles. As the Raiders look to improve upon their struggling offensive performance from the previous season, Jeanty’s adaptability could prove vital.
