Utah Hockey Club Considers Name Change Following Fan Input
The Utah Hockey Club is in the process of reconsidering its choice of team name, with strong support from the fanbase for the option 'Utah Outlaws.' This decision follows a significant response from fans during in-arena voting conducted on Thursday night. The organization has indicated that the feedback suggests the Outlaws should be a primary candidate for the team's permanent name, supplanting the previously favored 'Wasatch,' a name derived from a Utah mountain range.
Fans will have multiple opportunities to cast their votes for the team's official name during upcoming games at Delta Center. The options now include Utah Outlaws, Utah Mammoth, and Utah Hockey Club. Voting will take place during the games against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday, the St. Louis Blues on Sunday, and the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, giving supporters several chances to advocate for their preferred name.
Initially, the Utah Hockey Club, which embarked on its inaugural season as a new franchise for the 2024-25 NHL season, had considered a variety of names. Sandy-born player Clayton Keller previously suggested the name 'Yeti' in interviews. However, trademark complications arose when the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office denied the franchise's attempt to secure the Yeti brand due to potential confusion with existing trademarks. Consequently, the proposed name was omitted from the final voting options presented to fans.
