NHL Trade Deadline: Key Sellers to Watch

As the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline approaches in less than a month, teams are preparing to finalize their rosters for the postseason following the conclusion of the 4 Nations Tournament. With only a few weeks of games remaining, a clearer picture is emerging regarding which teams are likely to be buyers and which will be sellers. For some teams, the right acquisition at the trade deadline may significantly impact their championship aspirations.
Several teams are positioned as sellers, but not all possess impactful trade pieces that could benefit contenders. This article identifies four teams that could serve as 'kingmakers' by providing players that may be the missing components for contending franchises. One team under consideration is the New York Islanders. However, it is contingent on their willingness to sell before the March 7 deadline, a decision that remains uncertain. General manager Lou Lamoriello historically refrains from in-season trades, and despite a recent surge that has placed the Islanders at the fringes of playoff contention, the likelihood of reaching the postseason remains slim. Should they choose to sell, the Islanders have significant rental players, such as center Brock Nelson and winger Kyle Palmieri, who both have the potential to greatly assist a contending team.
Another noteworthy seller is the Buffalo Sabres, who have previously been instrumental in helping other franchises secure Stanley Cup victories through trades. Players like Ryan O'Reilly and Jack Eichel, who were moved before championship runs by their new teams, highlight the Sabres' track record. Although players such as Jason Zucker are seen as valuable depth options, the focus could be on the potential trading of Dylan Cozens or Bowen Byram. The Sabres have set a high value on Cozens, who, after a promising breakout season, has seen a decline in production. This change in environment could be beneficial for a player like Cozens, who may thrive in a new setting. Byram has also emerged as a bright spot for Buffalo amidst a challenging season.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have initiated their selling process, already parting ways with players like Lars Eller and Marcus Pettersson. While speculation about moves involving franchise cornerstones such as Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin remains largely unfounded, the team possesses other players who could attract significant interest from contenders. Bryan Rust, known for his two-way game and championship experience, could be a coveted asset for a general manager looking to bolster their lineup. Additionally, winger Rickard Rakell, on pace for 40 goals and signed at a reasonable contract, presents a desirable option for teams in need of offensive support. One player to monitor closely is defenseman Erik Karlsson, who has not met the expectations since joining Pittsburgh but still holds considerable value as a difference-maker for a playoff-bound team.
The final team of interest is the Boston Bruins, whose actions at the trade deadline remain uncertain. While still vying for a playoff spot, there is a growing belief that their challenges may hinder any championship prospects. With a potential lack of a No. 1 center and declining performance from their previously elite goaltending duo, it is suggested that the Bruins might opt to sell some of their assets. Trent Frederic appears to be a likely candidate to depart, and the future of Brandon Carlo is similarly in question. However, the most intriguing situation involves Brad Marchand, a player who possesses substantial appeal for any contender. Despite his age and evident decline in certain areas, Marchand remains an elite all-around player who could significantly elevate a contender's postseason chances. With many general managers likely to express interest in acquiring him, it is imperative that the Bruins seriously consider their options.
