Shai Gilgeous-Alexanders MVP Potential Recognized by Former Coach

Former head coach Michael Malone has expressed his belief that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder is a strong candidate for the 2024-25 NBA MVP award. During an appearance on ESPN's postgame coverage, Malone made this assertion following the Thunder's decisive 114-88 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals.
In that game, Gilgeous-Alexander demonstrated his capability to take charge, finishing with an impressive 31 points, nine assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Despite experiencing initial difficulties, he managed to dominate the contest in the second half, showcasing his talent by frequently getting to the free-throw line, executing midrange jumpers, and driving past defenders to finish strong at the rim. His ability to facilitate play also contributed to the Thunder's control during the third quarter, securing a 1-0 lead in the series.
Michael Malone, who coached Nikola Jokić during his tenure with the Denver Nuggets, noted that Gilgeous-Alexander deserves recognition should he clinch his first MVP award. Malone’s support for the Oklahoma City star is particularly noteworthy as he had been a vocal advocate for Jokić during his three MVP-winning seasons. As Malone shifts from his previous role with the Nuggets to an analyst position, his comments reflect a new perspective on the evolving MVP race, now featuring both Gilgeous-Alexander and Jokić.
