Rookie Ashton Jeanty Adjusts Stance Under Raiders Coaching Staff Guidance

Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly has clarified that the recent adjustment to rookie running back Ashton Jeanty's backfield stance was suggested by running backs coach Deland McCullough. During a press conference, Kelly stated, 'I didn't tell anybody on this team to be in any stances because I don't coach positions.' This acknowledgment highlights the collaborative nature of coaching within the Raiders organization.
Jeanty, who was picked by the Raiders as the No. 6 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, discussed the stance change during an appearance on the show Up & Adams, recounting an interaction he had with Kelly at the rookie minicamp. 'What's crazy is, Chip Kelly comes to me the first day of rookie minicamp, and he's like 'You ever play basketball?' And I'm like, 'Yeah, I play basketball, you know I can dunk and all that.' He's like, 'OK, show me how you would guard me,' and he's acting like he's holding the ball,' Jeanty explained. This unique approach made a significant impression on the young running back, who previously employed a dominating upright stance throughout his college career at Boise State.
During his final collegiate season in 2024, Jeanty recorded impressive statistics, ranking No. 2 in Heisman Trophy voting as he led the nation with 2,601 rushing yards on 374 attempts, culminating in 30 total touchdowns over 14 games. His ability to break tackles and evade defenders was evident, as he averaged an impressive 7.0 yards per carry. Although Jeanty has committed to altering his stance per the Raiders' coaching staff request, he remains optimistic about potentially reverting back in the future, stating, 'I have to earn my stripes and make some plays first, but I don't think it's going to be the end [of the stance].' Despite being somewhat external to the decision, Kelly expressed admiration for Jeanty's potential, noting, 'He’s awesome and he’s such a coachable guy that you can do a lot of things with him.' With the Raiders struggling with the worst rushing attack in the NFL last season, Jeanty's contributions may prove critical in revitalizing the team's offense.
