Offseason Speculations as the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs Conclude

As the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs progress towards their conclusion, speculation is intensifying regarding the offseason plans for teams that have been eliminated from contention. The recent exit of the Toronto Maple Leafs from the Stanley Cup race has propelled Mitch Marner into the spotlight, potentially making him the most sought-after player in this summer's free-agent market. Discussions about his possible destinations have gained momentum as the free agency period approaches on July 1.
In addition to Marner, the trade market is generating considerable chatter, particularly concerning players who may be on the move this off-season. Notably, Bowen Byram of the Buffalo Sabres is attracting attention for his impressive skill set. With the NHL draft scheduled for June 27-28, teams are eyeing potential prospects while weighing the option of trading their first-round picks for the right deal. Reports from various sources suggest that both the Vancouver Canucks and the San Jose Sharks are open to the possibility of trading their first-round selections. On May 20, Eric Stephens from The Athletic indicated that Sharks General Manager Mike Grier would consider moving his pick if a player capable of immediately benefiting the roster is offered in return. The trend does not stop there, as it appears the Columbus Blue Jackets and Washington Capitals may also be contemplating similar moves with their picks.
On May 22, SI.com's Nick Horwat relayed that Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell expressed willingness to entertain offers for the club's two first-round picks, including the 14th overall and the 20th overall from the Minnesota Wild. Meanwhile, Capitals GM Chris Patrick revealed his openness to offers regarding his 27th overall pick, stating, 'I think you have to be open to all options.' While these teams may entertain offers, a compelling trade proposal that includes a player capable of stepping into their lineup immediately may be enough to entice at least one of them to act. The Utah Mammoth, in particular, have been undergoing a rebuild since their final seasons in Arizona under GM Bill Armstrong, emphasizing the importance of astute roster moves as they seek to return to contention.
