NFL Teams Assess Roster Needs Ahead of 2025 Season

As the commencement of the 2025 NFL regular season approaches in roughly a month, many teams are actively evaluating and optimizing their current rosters. However, as training camps and preseason games unfold, it is expected that some teams will recognize deficiencies in their squads. Leading up to the roster cut deadline on August 26, several franchises may seek to address significant roster gaps or unload contracts through trades. The offseason has already witnessed a flurry of trades involving prominent players such as Geno Smith, DK Metcalf, Deebo Samuel, Laremy Tunsil, and George Pickens, suggesting that the trade activity could continue even as the preseason draws closer. While late-preseason trades are not always headline-worthy, historical precedents exist; notably, the Houston Texans traded franchise-tagged pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney to the Seattle Seahawks just before the 2019 season kicked off. This season, no disgruntled franchise-tagged players have emerged as trade candidates, but several notable athletes could still find themselves in discussions for a move. This analysis reviews potential trade candidates, the interests of various teams, and how prospective blockbuster deals might materialize.
One potential trade scenario involves the Detroit Lions acquiring edge rusher Trey Hendrickson from the Cincinnati Bengals. Hendrickson has spent a considerable portion of the offseason seeking either a new contract or a trade. Although he returned to training camp after ending his holdout, his dissatisfaction persists. The Lions have long sought a capable pass-rushing complement to Aidan Hutchinson, a need that went unaddressed during free agency and the draft. Hendrickson's addition, alongside Hutchinson, could create a formidable pass-rush duo for the Lions and help the Bengals receive fair compensation while allowing Hendrickson to move outside of their conference.
Another intriguing trade possibility is between the Washington Commanders and the San Francisco 49ers involving wide receiver Jauan Jennings. Although the trade speculation surrounding Jennings has lessened, the player indicated his desire for a new contract or a trade to the 49ers in mid-July. Following a breakout season with 975 receiving yards and six touchdowns, it is understandable that he expressed these desires. Despite a lingering calf injury, Jennings remains an attractive option for teams seeking an upgrade at the receiver position. Although the Commanders have already acquired Deebo Samuel from San Francisco, they may still have interest in Jennings, especially as general manager Adam Peters has ties to the 49ers organization. A hypothetical trade involving Jennings and receiver Noah Brown could benefit both teams, particularly if the Commanders need to respond to Terry McLaurin's trade request.
The Chicago Bears' tight end Cole Kmet has not been heavily featured in trade discussions this offseason, with the organization maintaining that they are not looking to move him. Kmet has been a significant contributor to the Bears' offense since being selected in 2020, accumulating 2,592 receiving yards. However, the Bears' recent investment—using a 10th overall pick on tight end Colston Loveland—has prompted speculation about Kmet's future with the team. While Kmet is regarded as part of the Bears' long-term vision, a substantial trade offer could potentially entice the organization, offering $10 million in cap savings. The Jacksonville Jaguars, who recently lost Evan Engram to free agency, might find Kmet an appealing target to bolster their tight end position, especially given their coaching connections to Chicago.
Another notable trade scenario involves the Pittsburgh Steelers and Commanders' wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who has formally requested a trade from Washington. As various analysts consider potential packages for McLaurin, the Steelers have emerged as a possible suitor. Following their acquisition of DK Metcalf, the Steelers are keen on maximizing their offensive arsenal. However, the potential financial implications of adding another high-paid receiver might pose challenges since McLaurin is likely seeking a deal that surpasses the lucrative contract Metcalf recently signed. Nevertheless, adding McLaurin could enhance the Steelers' offensive scheme, especially with the anticipated involvement of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Meanwhile, Washington could receive speedy receiver Calvin Austin III in return, facilitating a mutually beneficial arrangement.
A new development emerged with the Dallas Cowboys' edge rusher Micah Parsons requesting a trade, elevating him to one of the offseason's most desirable trade targets. With the Cardinals having enhanced their pass-rushing capabilities through recent signings and NFL Draft acquisitions, they may consider making a run at Parsons. The team's eagerness to expedite their win-loss record under head coach Jonathan Gannon could fortify their desire to pursue a player of Parsons' caliber. However, Parsons is expected to demand a salary exceeding $41 million, complicating matters under the team's current salary cap situation. The Cardinals may offset some of this financial burden by offloading pass-rusher Zaven Collins, which could provide Dallas with valuable depth while allowing the Cardinals to maintain fiscal flexibility.
The Buffalo Bills, despite facing cap limitations, may look to enhance their pass-rushing corps by targeting New York Giants' standout Kayvon Thibodeaux. The promising third-year player has accrued 21 sacks and is set to carry a manageable cap number in the 2025 season. Although trade rumors regarding Thibodeaux have not emerged, pairing him with the likes of Joey Bosa, Gregory Rousseau, and A.J. Epenesa could significantly bolster the Bills' pass rush. In a strategic move, the Bills might consider moving defensive tackle DaQuan Jones to create additional salary cap space. Jones' departure would not only save $7.8 million in cap costs but also allow the Giants to deepen their defensive lineup, given their interest in his skill set.
As teams assess their rosters and explore potential trades, the upcoming weeks could unveil significant changes in the NFL landscape, setting the stage for an eventful 2025 season.
