Cleveland Browns Name Joe Flacco Starting Quarterback for 2025 Season Opener

Flacco Takes the Helm in Cleveland
The Cleveland Browns have officially named Joe Flacco as their starting quarterback for the beginning of the 2025 season. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski made the announcement, confirming that Flacco will lead the team in their Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Flacco’s selection comes amidst challenges faced by other quarterbacks vying for the position. Kenny Pickett has been limited by a hamstring injury, while Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders have dealt with their own physical issues, including shoulder and oblique injuries for Sanders. With these setbacks, Flacco quickly rose to the forefront of the competition.
Flacco's Return and Previous Success
Flacco, a seasoned NFL veteran entering his 18th year, is no stranger to success on the field. He previously won a Super Bowl and was named Super Bowl MVP while with the Baltimore Ravens. After time with the Denver Broncos, New York Jets, and Philadelphia Eagles, Flacco joined the Browns' practice squad in 2023 and impressed by leading the team to a playoff berth, posting 1,616 yards and 13 touchdowns over five games.
For his standout performance that season, he earned the title of NFL's Comeback Player of the Year. Following his brief stint with the Browns, Flacco backed up quarterback Anthony Richardson with the Indianapolis Colts, showcasing his skills by throwing for 1,761 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions across eight games.
Competition and Outlook
Returning to Cleveland this offseason on a one-year deal, Flacco faced fresh competition after the Browns drafted both Gabriel and Sanders. However, despite being in a room with younger, ambitious quarterbacks, Flacco distinguished himself during training camp, emerging as the frontrunner for the starting role. According to reports, he became the 'strong favorite' ahead of his younger colleagues in early August.
While Flacco has secured the starting position for the opening game, he remains aware of the talented backups ready to step up if needed. With the season set to begin, all eyes will be on Flacco to see if he can capitalize on his opportunity and lead the Browns to success.
