Miami Heat's Tyler Herro Set to Miss Season Opener Due to Surgery

Tyler Herro Undergoes Surgery, Out for Season Opener
Miami Heat All-Star guard Tyler Herro is expected to miss the start of the 2025-26 NBA regular season due to surgery on his left foot and ankle. According to a report from Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald, Herro's surgery is scheduled for Friday, and he will not be cleared in time for the Heat's regular-season opener against the Orlando Magic on October 22.
Herro, who has been dealing with an impingement since mid-summer, opted for surgery after platelet-rich plasma and cortisone injections failed to resolve the issue. The decision was made to prevent further complications down the line. Herro confirmed the surgery through a post on his Instagram story.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Herro's expected recovery timeframe is approximately eight weeks. The issue traces back to an injury sustained during an offseason workout.
A Look at Herro's Career
Originally selected as the No. 13 overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft out of Kentucky, Tyler Herro has established himself as one of the league’s most consistent scorers over the past four seasons. During the 2021-22 season, he set a career high of 20.1 points per game, earning the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award.
Herro's role expanded significantly in the subsequent seasons; he has averaged over 20 points per game each season since. Last year, he enjoyed his best season yet, averaging career-highs of 23.9 points, 5.5 assists, and 5.2 rebounds, while also making 3.3 three-pointers per game with shooting efficiencies of 37.5% from beyond the arc and 47.2% from the field. His standout performance earned him his first All-Star selection.
The Heat's Challenge Ahead
Despite having both Herro and three-time All-Star center Bam Adebayo, the Heat registered a disappointing 37-45 record last season, landing them the 10th spot in the Eastern Conference. They narrowly made the playoffs as the No. 8 seed after victories over the Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks in the play-in tournament, only to be swiftly eliminated by the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round.
This offseason, the Heat have sought to bolster their roster with key acquisitions, including veteran shooting guard Norman Powell, who averaged a career-high 21.8 points last season with the Los Angeles Clippers. Additionally, guards Davion Mitchell and Andrew Wiggins are set to contribute after their trades during the 2024-25 campaign. With Herro's absence, Adebayo, Powell, Mitchell, Wiggins, as well as guards Jaime Jaquez and Terry Rozier, will be required to step up to fill the scoring gap.
