Jonathan Kuminga's Future in Flux as Teams Circle During Free Agency

Uncertain Times for Jonathan Kuminga
As restricted free agency unfolds, Jonathan Kuminga's future with the Golden State Warriors remains unclear. The talented forward has caught the attention of multiple teams beyond the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings, as reported by his agent, Aaron Turner.
Interest from Multiple Teams
During an appearance on The Hoop Collective Podcast, Turner shared insights on Kuminga's status, indicating that there are other suitors interested in the young player. 'He’s gotten a chance to hear from other teams,' Turner stated. 'Sacramento, he spent some time with them. Got to meet Scott Perry, Doug Christie. The Suns and what they've offered him. There’s been other teams too, maybe planting seeds for '26, '27.' These teams reportedly emphasize the desire to empower Kuminga, assuring him, 'We want you to be you. We don’t want you to change anything. We want to give you a huge opportunity to play.'
Trade Talks and Offers
Previously, Sam Amick of The Athletic mentioned that the Kings and Suns were the primary teams pursuing Kuminga, although the Warriors decided to end trade discussions with both franchises earlier in the summer. Sacramento's proposal included veteran guard Malik Monk and a protected 2030 first-round pick, along with a three-year deal worth $63 million for Kuminga. However, negotiations were complicated by the protections attached to the draft choice.
On the other hand, the Warriors have extended a three-year contract offer worth $75.2 million to Kuminga, which also features a team option for the final season. According to Turner, his client is open to accepting a multi-year deal from Golden State that includes a player option instead of a team option.
Looking Ahead
Kuminga is coming off a challenging season in which he only made 47 appearances due to a sprained right ankle and experienced inconsistency in his spot within the Warriors' lineup. In the 2024-25 season, he averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, shooting 45.4 percent from the field and 30.5 percent from beyond the arc. Both Kuminga and the Warriors are eager to find a resolution ahead of training camp, set to open on September 29.
