Lamar Jackson Struggles as Ravens Face Tough Road to Playoffs

Ravens' Season Hang in Balance with Jackson's Struggles
The Baltimore Ravens find themselves outside the AFC playoff picture with a record of 6-7, and their two-time MVP quarterback, Lamar Jackson, hasn't been able to bail them out as he has in past seasons. Recent assessments indicate that Jackson is not performing at his usual level.
Concerns About Jackson's Performance
An NFL executive expressed concerns in a Tuesday report from Jeff Howe of The Athletic, stating that Jackson, 'just doesn't look the same.' This sentiment was echoed by a coach who noted, 'He looks off with his timing.' Another executive highlighted that Jackson is 'just not as explosive as in the past.' The absence of explosive plays this season has been particularly glaring, as Jackson has yet to record a single run of 20 or more yards. This would mark the first time in his career that he finished a season without at least one such run.
From 2018 to 2022, Jackson amassed a staggering 55 runs of 20 yards or more, including eight last season alone. The current season's average of three plays of at least 20 yards per game represents the second-lowest of his career, with all those big plays coming via the air. This trend undermines his historical ability to change games with his running prowess since joining the league.
Health Issues Affecting Performance
Jackson's struggles could be partly attributed to health issues, as he has missed three games this season with a hamstring injury, along with additional practice time due to ankle and toe discomfort. It appears he may not be operating at 100 percent capacity, which could be affecting his overall production.
Despite these challenges, the Ravens need Jackson to rediscover the explosive form that has defined much of his career if they hope to make a late-season push for the playoffs. In the last five games, Jackson's performance has included just two touchdown passes compared to four interceptions and only one rushing touchdown, which occurred during the recent loss to the division-rival Pittsburgh Steelers.
Upcoming Challenges for the Ravens
Looking ahead, Baltimore faces a difficult schedule with upcoming games against the Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers, and the Steelers again. Only the Bengals are currently outside the playoff picture, but they become a more formidable opponent with Joe Burrow back in action.
The Ravens are confronted with an uphill battle to secure a playoff position. However, their prospects will improve significantly if Jackson can return to the form that made him a superstar.
