JJ Redick's Debut Season with Lakers Sparks Debate on Coaching Credentials

Redick Leads Lakers to Playoffs Despite Skepticism
In his inaugural season as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, JJ Redick has successfully guided the team to the playoffs, finishing with an impressive 50-32 record and securing the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. However, his rapid rise from retired player to head coach has drawn skepticism from some of his peers in the NBA.
During a recent episode of The Zach Lowe Show, Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch cleverly critiqued Redick's qualifications for leading the storied franchise. While discussing the podcasting realm, Finch quipped, "I mean, it'll qualify you to coach the Lakers," subtly referencing Redick's lack of formal coaching experience prior to his hiring.
Redick, who had spent his post-playing career primarily as a podcaster—co-hosting a show with Lakers superstar LeBron James—was entrusted by Los Angeles to take the helm ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. Despite the doubts surrounding his appointment, Redick showcased his coaching potential, leading his team to a playoff appearance. Unfortunately for the Lakers, their postseason journey ended in disappointment when they were defeated by Finch's Timberwolves in the first round, losing the series in five games.
As the current season progresses, Redick has had the Lakers off to a solid start with an 8-4 record, and he's determined to silence any lingering criticisms of his coaching capabilities. With the eyes of the NBA on him, Redick is focused on proving that he can lead the Lakers to greater heights in his second season.
