Eugenio Suarez Returns to Seattle Mariners in Trade from Arizona Diamondbacks

In a significant move during the 2025 season, the Arizona Diamondbacks have traded third baseman Eugenio Suarez back to the Seattle Mariners, a familiar destination for the player. This transaction, reported by Jeff Passan of ESPN, marks a return for Suarez, who was acquired by the Diamondbacks less than two years ago in an offseason trade with the Mariners following the conclusion of the 2023 campaign.
In exchange for Suarez, the Diamondbacks received three prospects, all of whom rank among the top 20 in the Mariners' system, according to MLB.com. Leading this group is Tyler Locklear, positioned as the No. 9 prospect. Since joining the Diamondbacks, Suarez has made a significant impact, recording 30 home runs and 101 RBI during his first season with the team in 2024. He has continued to demonstrate his prowess in 2025, currently hitting .248 with 36 home runs and 87 RBI, which has earned him his second career All-Star selection. His performance has been recognized multiple times, as he has been named the National League Player of the Week on four occasions, highlighted by a remarkable achievement where he became only the 19th player in Major League Baseball history to hit four home runs in a single game during an April loss to the Atlanta Braves. Furthermore, he surpassed the 300 career home run mark earlier this season.
Despite being regarded as one of the most formidable power-hitting third basemen in the major leagues, Suarez has experienced difficulty in securing a permanent team. He made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2014 and was subsequently traded to the Cincinnati Reds the following season. After spending seven seasons with the Reds, Suarez was acquired by the Mariners, who retained him for two years before the Diamondbacks' acquisition. The addition of a powerful bat like Suarez's is expected to bolster the Mariners' lineup, which currently holds a 57-51 record. His integration into the team should complement star catcher Cal Raleigh as the Mariners pursue a playoff berth.
