DeAaron Fox Secures Max Contract with San Antonio Spurs

De'Aaron Fox, who joined the San Antonio Spurs at the NBA trade deadline in February, has signed a four-year, $229 million max contract, as confirmed by his agent Rich Paul. Previously, Fox was under a five-year, $163 million deal with the Sacramento Kings, which would have allowed him to enter free agency after the 2025-26 season. Following his trade to San Antonio, Fox expressed a desire to secure a new contract with the Spurs during the offseason, reiterating this sentiment in June.
Despite the presence of two promising young guards in their backcourt, the Spurs signaled their intent to make Fox a long-term component of their roster. A Spurs executive noted, 'When we made that trade, we knew what the contract status was, of course. We see De’Aaron as someone who can grow with our young players and be a real leader for us. We’re hopeful we can make something happen to keep him in San Antonio for a long time.' Fox was acquired in a three-team trade involving the Kings and the Chicago Bulls, with Sacramento receiving Zach LaVine, Sidy Cissoko, and multiple draft picks, while Chicago obtained Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Kevin Huerter, and a first-round pick in 2025.
In his 17 appearances with the Spurs, Fox averaged 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. He was paired with Victor Wembanyama, one of the most promising young talents in the league, in hopes that this dynamic duo could guide the Spurs toward their first championship since 2014. However, the Spurs encountered a challenge when Wembanyama had to be sidelined for the closing stages of the 2024-25 season due to a blood clot in his shoulder. Fortunately, the team remains optimistic about Wembanyama's return to the court in time for the 2025-26 season. Additionally, with the NBA draft approaching, San Antonio is set to welcome two new talents: No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper from Rutgers and No. 14 overall pick Carter Bryant from Arizona. As the Spurs aim for their first playoff appearance since 2019, the core of their team will revolve around Fox and Wembanyama, with expectations that the rookies will contribute early.
