DeAaron Fox Signs Max Deal with San Antonio Spurs

After joining the San Antonio Spurs during the NBA trade deadline in February, De'Aaron Fox has secured a new contract. The star point guard has signed a four-year, $229 million max contract with the Spurs, as confirmed by his agent Rich Paul to ESPN's Shams Charania. Previously, Fox was under a five-year, $163 million deal he had inked with the Sacramento Kings, which would have made him a free agent after the 2025-26 season.
In the months following his trade to San Antonio, Fox expressed his desire to sign a new contract with the team during the offseason, reiterating this sentiment in June. The Spurs, despite having two promising young players already in their backcourt, demonstrated a clear intent to retain Fox for the long term. A Spurs executive mentioned in July, 'When we made that trade, we knew what the contract status was, of course. We see De’Aaron as someone who can grow with our young players and be a real leader for us. We’re hopeful we can make something happen to keep him in San Antonio for a long time.'
Fox was acquired in a three-team trade involving the Kings and the Chicago Bulls, leading to Sacramento receiving Zach LaVine, Sidy Cissoko, and several draft picks while Chicago ended up with Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Kevin Huerter, and a 2025 first-round pick. In his 17 games with the Spurs, Fox averaged 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. The Spurs aim to pair Fox with one of the league's brightest young talents, Victor Wembanyama, with aspirations that this duo can guide the team to its first championship since 2014. However, these ambitions faced a hurdle when Wembanyama was sidelined for the concluding stretch of the 2024-25 season due to a blood clot in his shoulder. Fortunately, the Spurs remain optimistic that Wembanyama will return to the court at the start of the 2025-26 season. Additionally, the team is set to introduce two exciting prospects following the NBA draft: No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper from Rutgers and No. 14 overall pick Carter Bryant from Arizona. With the core consisting of Fox and Wembanyama, the Spurs will look towards the rookies for immediate contributions as they seek their first playoff appearance since 2019. Fox's game has continued to grow in recent years, placing him on a roster that offers a genuine opportunity to compete for a championship for the first time in his career. With the signing of the new contract, the Spurs' future plans will revolve around both Fox and Wembanyama.
