DeAaron Fox Signs Max Contract with Spurs Following Trade

De'Aaron Fox has signed a four-year, $229 million max contract with the San Antonio Spurs after being traded to the team at the NBA trade deadline in February. The contract was confirmed by his agent, Rich Paul, to ESPN's Shams Charania. Previously, Fox had been on a five-year, $163 million deal with the Sacramento Kings, which was set to make him a free agent after the 2025-26 season. After joining the Spurs, Fox expressed his desire to secure a new contract during the offseason, a sentiment he reiterated in June.
Despite having two promising young players already in their backcourt, the Spurs made it clear that they value Fox's presence for the long term. A Spurs executive stated, 'When we made that trade, we knew what the contract status was, of course. We see De’Aaron as someone who can grow with our young players and be a real leader for us. We’re hopeful we can make something happen to keep him in San Antonio for a long time.' Fox was acquired by the Spurs in a three-team trade involving the Kings and the Chicago Bulls, through which Sacramento received Zach LaVine and several draft picks, while Chicago obtained Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Kevin Huerter, and a 2025 first-round draft pick.
In his 17 games with the Spurs, Fox averaged 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. His pairing with Victor Wembanyama, a highly regarded young talent, is viewed as pivotal for the Spurs' aspirations towards a championship since their last title in 2014. However, the team's plans encountered a setback when Wembanyama had to be shut down for the 2024-25 season due to a blood clot in his shoulder. Fortunately, the Spurs remain optimistic that Wembanyama will be ready to return at the beginning of the 2025-26 season. San Antonio is also set to welcome two promising rookies: Dylan Harper, the second overall pick from Rutgers, and Carter Bryant, the fourteenth overall pick from Arizona. The foundational players for the Spurs will be Fox and Wembanyama, with hopes that the new draft picks will contribute significantly as the team aims for its first playoff appearance since 2019. With his new contract, Fox is positioned as a central figure in the Spurs' future plans alongside Wembanyama.
