DeAaron Fox Signs Max Contract with San Antonio Spurs

De'Aaron Fox has secured a new contract with the San Antonio Spurs following his acquisition during the NBA trade deadline in February. The star point guard has signed a four-year, $229 million maximum contract, as confirmed by his agent Rich Paul to Moneyline. Previously, Fox was under a five-year, $163 million agreement with the Sacramento Kings that would have allowed him to enter free agency after the 2025-26 season.
After joining the Spurs, Fox expressed his desire to renegotiate a new contract during the offseason and reiterated these sentiments in June. Despite the presence of two other promising young players in the Spurs' backcourt, the organization demonstrated their intention to secure Fox’s long-term commitment. According to a Spurs executive who spoke with Moneyline's Keith Smith in July, the team was fully aware of Fox's contract status during the trade negotiations. 'We see De’Aaron as someone who can grow with our young players and be a real leader for us,' the executive noted, emphasizing the optimism surrounding Fox's future with the franchise.
Fox was acquired by the Spurs in a three-team trade involving the Kings and Chicago Bulls, in which Sacramento received Zach LaVine, Sidy Cissoko, and several draft picks. In exchange, the Bulls gained players such as Zach Collins, Tre Jones, and Kevin Huerter, alongside a 2025 first-round draft pick. During his 17 games with San Antonio, Fox averaged 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. The Spurs are hopeful that the pairing of Fox with Victor Wembanyama, one of the league's most promising young talents, will lead to their first championship since 2014. However, the team's plans were disrupted when Wembanyama was sidelined towards the end of the 2024-25 season due to a blood clot in his shoulder. Fortunately, the Spurs are optimistic that he will return to the court for the start of the 2025-26 season. Additionally, the Spurs look to enhance their roster by adding rookie prospects Dylan Harper, the No. 2 overall pick from Rutgers, and Carter Bryant, the No. 14 overall pick from Arizona. As the core of the team revolves around Fox and Wembanyama, the Spurs anticipate that these newcomers will contribute significantly as they strive for their first playoff appearance since 2019. With the new contract in place, the future plans for the Spurs are set to focus on building a competitive team around Fox and Wembanyama.
