Chip Kelly Comments on Rookie Running Back Ashton Jeantys Stance Change

Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly recently discussed the adjustment of rookie running back Ashton Jeanty's stance, sharing insights from running backs coach Deland McCullough. During a media session, Kelly clarified, 'I didn't tell anybody on this team to be in any stances because I don't coach positions.'
Jeanty, who was selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, recounted an interaction with Kelly during rookie minicamp. He relayed that Kelly inquired about his basketball experience and demonstrated a defensive stance to illustrate the importance of a proper backfield position. Previously, Jeanty had adopted an upright stance during his successful collegiate career at Boise State, where he finished his junior season with standout statistics, ranking second in Heisman Trophy voting.
Despite the request for a stance change, Jeanty has expressed openness to adjustments, stating, 'I have to earn my stripes and make some plays first, but I don't think it's going to be the end [of the stance].' This year, he aims to enhance a Raiders offense that struggled with rushing last season. Kelly has praised Jeanty's versatility and coachability, noting his potential to contribute both in the backfield and as a slot receiver.
