Bill Belichick Advocates for Renaming the Super Bowl Trophy in Honor of Tom Brady
The NBA has recently commemorated its storied history by renaming several of its awards after some of the game’s most iconic players. In light of this move, Bill Belichick, head coach of the New England Patriots, expressed a desire for the NFL to take similar steps by proposing that the Super Bowl trophy be renamed after legendary quarterback Tom Brady. During his recent appearance on the Let's Go podcast, Belichick remarked, 'Maybe they should name it the Brady Trophy.' This statement underscores Brady’s unprecedented achievement of winning seven Super Bowl titles—a record unmatched in league history.
Belichick’s comments emerged within a broader discussion about the critical roles of both coaches and players in cultivating successful teams. He passionately emphasized that the presence of high-caliber players is ultimately the decisive factor in determining a team's success. 'You gotta have good players and as a coach, you want to give your players a chance to win. You wanna put 'em in a position where if they go out there and play well, they'll have a chance to win,' Belichick explained. He referenced lessons learned from the esteemed coach Bill Parcells, highlighting the importance of always finding a way to win and providing players with every opportunity to succeed on the field.
The Super Bowl trophy has borne the name of legendary coach Vince Lombardi since 1970, commemorating his triumphs with the Green Bay Packers in the first two Super Bowls. Belichick, recognized for his remarkable coaching career, holds the record for the most Super Bowl victories, having claimed six championships with the Patriots and two as a defensive coordinator for the New York Giants. Meanwhile, Tom Brady remains the only player in NFL history to have secured seven championship titles, which include victories from both the regular Super Bowl era and the pre-Super Bowl days. Only Charles Haley, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, has achieved five Super Bowl wins among players. The NBA undertook similar renaming initiatives during the 2022-23 season, changing the names of key awards such as MVP and Finals MVP to honor league legends. However, the Larry O'Brien Trophy, awarded to the NBA championship team, continues to honor former commissioner Larry O'Brien, an influential figure during a transformative period in the league's history. Given the traditional resistance to altering significant symbols in sports, the prospect of renaming the Lombardi Trophy remains unlikely. Nonetheless, the NFL could consider honoring Brady's contributions to the game by naming the Super Bowl MVP award after him, mirroring the NBA's homage to Michael Jordan with the Finals MVP accolade.
