Las Vegas Raiders Consider Continuity with Defensive Coordinator Position
The Las Vegas Raiders are preparing for the 2025 NFL season with a new head coach and are reportedly focused on maintaining some continuity in the defensive coordinator role. According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, the organization is working towards re-signing Patrick Graham, who has served in this capacity for the past three seasons.
However, the Raiders may face competition, as the Jacksonville Jaguars have shown interest in Graham, having interviewed him recently for their own defensive coordinator vacancy. This interest is further emphasized by the fact that the Jaguars considered Graham multiple times during their search for a head coach before ultimately hiring Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen.
Graham's coaching resume includes a variety of positions since he entered the NFL in 2009 as an assistant with the New England Patriots. He spent seven seasons with New England in different roles before moving on to the New York Giants, where he served as the defensive line coach for two years. He then had brief stints with the Green Bay Packers and the Miami Dolphins before returning to the Giants as their defensive coordinator, a role he held for two seasons prior to joining the Raiders. Despite his extensive experience, Graham’s defenses have not consistently ranked well statistically, with no team finishing better than 12th in yards allowed or ninth in points allowed during his tenure. In fact, four of his six defenses ranked 23rd or worse in points allowed, including the Raiders, who finished 25th in that category last season with a record of 4-13 and a last-place finish in the AFC West. Nevertheless, the Raiders' front office, along with the new head coach, appears to maintain confidence in Graham's ability to improve the defensive unit if they are pursuing his return.
