Matthew Staffords Future with the Rams in Uncertainty Ahead of 2025 Season
Matthew Stafford is reportedly planning to continue his football career into the 2025 season, but his future with the Los Angeles Rams remains uncertain. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Stafford intends to play in 2025; however, the implications of his current contract situation may lead the Rams to consider parting ways with him.
Stafford and the Rams revised his contract last offseason, resulting in a hefty cap hit of $49.6 million for the 2025 season. Reports from Over The Cap indicate that should the Rams choose to trade him after June 1, they could save $27 million, while a post-June 1 release would result in $23 million in savings. Head Coach Sean McVay has expressed a desire for clarity in the situation, stating that he hopes it is resolved quickly to benefit all parties involved.
In his 16th NFL season, Stafford, now approaching his 37th birthday, showcased his abilities with 3,762 passing yards, 20 touchdown passes, and eight interceptions during the 2024 campaign. Although some may argue that his best days are behind him, Stafford remains more than capable of serving as a starting quarterback for a playoff-caliber team. Following the Rams' loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round, Stafford expressed confidence in his future, stating he 'sure feels like' he still has more football left in him. As the Rams weigh their options, whether cutting or trading Stafford could prove to be a pragmatic decision aimed at financial relief, it is likely that another team would be eager to sign the veteran signal-caller if he becomes available.
