Thanasis Antetokounmpo Cleared for NBA Return After Injury

Thanasis Antetokounmpo has received medical clearance to return to the NBA after an extended absence due to a torn Achilles. The former forward for the Milwaukee Bucks, and brother of Giannis Antetokounmpo, disclosed on his Thanalysis Show podcast that he has been cleared by doctors to resume playing basketball following his surgery for the injury, which took place in May 2024.
Antetokounmpo and his brother were teammates with the Milwaukee Bucks from the 2019-20 season through the 2023-24 season. Additionally, he had a brief stint playing for the New York Knicks during the 2015-16 season and previously played professionally in Greece before joining the Bucks. With Thanasis now a free agent, the next steps for his career remain uncertain. However, any potential contract will likely be evaluated in light of Giannis's future with the Bucks, particularly given that Giannis's status has been a significant topic of discussion following the team's first-round exit in the 2025 NBA playoffs.
In terms of performance, Thanasis Antetokounmpo enjoyed a career-high average of 3.6 points per game during the 2021-22 season, but his contributions diminished significantly in the 2023-24 campaign, where he averaged just 0.9 points, 0.5 assists, and 0.4 rebounds per game while posting an efficient shooting percentage of 53.3 percent from the field. Although adding Antetokounmpo may not be a major headline move for any team, he does bring veteran experience and can provide valuable depth to the frontcourt.
