Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Attracts MVP Attention Following Dominant Performance

Former Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone has expressed belief that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander could emerge as the NBA MVP for the 2024-25 season. During an appearance on ESPN's postgame analysis, Malone highlighted the Oklahoma City Thunder star's performance following their decisive 114-88 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals.
In this game, Gilgeous-Alexander demonstrated his capability to take over in critical moments, scoring 31 points and contributing nine assists, five rebounds, and three steals. His ability to draw fouls, along with proficient midrange shooting and attacking the rim with confidence, proved to be instrumental in overwhelming the Minnesota defense. Furthermore, his adept playmaking skills shone through as he effectively managed double-team situations, enabling the Thunder to assert dominance in the second half and secure a crucial series lead.
Despite the accolades, Malone’s comments on Gilgeous-Alexander's MVP potential are notable given his history with Nikola Jokić, whom he coached during his entire ten-year tenure with the Nuggets until his recent termination. Jokić, a seven-time All-Star, has previously claimed three MVP awards, making him a formidable contender for the title again this season. However, with Malone's recent shift in perspective since departing from the Nuggets, he appears open to the possibility of recognizing Gilgeous-Alexander's contributions and achievements, should he secure the MVP award over Jokić.
