Thanasis Antetokounmpo Cleared for NBA Return

Thanasis Antetokounmpo has received medical clearance to return to NBA action after missing the entire 2024-25 season due to a torn Achilles. The former Milwaukee Bucks forward and brother of superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo announced this development on his podcast, The Thanalysis Show. According to an article by Christopher Kuhagen in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, doctors have now approved Antetokounmpo to resume his basketball career, marking a significant comeback for the player.
In May 2024, Thanasis underwent surgery to repair the torn Achilles, which sidelined him for a full season. During his time with the Bucks, the Antetokounmpo brothers were teammates from the 2019-20 season through the conclusion of the 2023-24 campaign. Prior to joining the Bucks, Thanasis played a brief stint with the New York Knicks during the 2015-16 season and also competed professionally in Greece, showcasing his diverse basketball journey.
As a free agent, the future destination for Thanasis remains uncertain. However, any potential signing is likely to be analyzed through the lens of Giannis's relationship with the Milwaukee Bucks. The narrative surrounding Giannis's future was particularly pronounced following the Bucks' exit in the first round of the 2025 NBA playoffs. While some speculate that signing Thanasis could serve as a strategic move to potentially influence Giannis, the decision will rest on the teams' assessments. In the 2021-22 season, Thanasis averaged a career-high 3.6 points per game, though his role diminished in 2023-24, where he recorded 0.9 points, 0.5 assists, and 0.4 rebounds per game, coupled with a shooting percentage of 53.3 percent from the field. While signing Antetokounmpo may not be a marquee acquisition for most teams, his veteran presence could provide valuable depth in the frontcourt.
