Tatsuya Imai Keeps Options Open as MLB Decision Looms

Japanese Pitcher Tatsuya Imai Evaluates MLB Opportunities
With less than a month remaining before making a crucial decision regarding his MLB future, Japanese pitcher Tatsuya Imai is keeping an open mind. Reports from The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Patrick Mooney indicate that Imai, currently a free agent, is expected to embark on a tour to meet with specific teams committed to offering him a long-term contract. This exploration will likely commence after the upcoming Winter Meetings in Orlando, Florida.
Insider Jeff Passan from ESPN noted that some MLB executives speculated that Imai might finalize his choice before the conclusion of the Winter Meetings on December 10. However, it appears that the decision-making process may extend beyond that date.
As discussions heat up, at least one potential team has been ruled out of the running. According to Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic, the San Francisco Giants do not foresee making the necessary nine-figure investment needed to sign Imai or any of the other prominent pitchers available in free agency.
While the Los Angeles Dodgers feature a strong Japanese presence with players like Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Roki Sasaki, Imai has effectively dismissed the likelihood of joining the World Series champions. He conveyed to former MLB star Daisuke Matsuzaka, "Of course, I'd enjoy playing alongside Ohtani, Yamamoto, and Sasaki, but winning against a team like that and becoming a world champion would be the most valuable thing in my life. If anything, I'd rather take them down."
Imai has also expressed that having a Japanese player on the roster is not a critical factor for him. He remarked, "In a way, I want to experience that sense of survival. When I come face-to-face with cultural differences, I want to see how I can overcome them on my own — that's part of what I'm excited about." Rosenthal and Mooney noted that this attitude should not deter potential suitors.
The Chicago Cubs, who currently have Seiya Suzuki and Shota Imanaga on their roster, are highlighted as a potential fit for Imai. Furthermore, Imai's confidence and curiosity suggest he would not shy away from performing in a prominent East Coast market, which opens up possibilities with teams like the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, New York Yankees, and Philadelphia Phillies, all of whom are in search of starting pitching. With the lack of competition following Dylan Cease’s commitment elsewhere, Imai's leverage in negotiations may increase, paving the way for a competitive bidding environment as he considers offers.
