Stephen Curry Breakdown: Mastering His Unique Shooting Motion on 'Mind the Game' Podcast

Stephen Curry Shares Insights on His Shooting Technique
In a recent episode of the Mind the Game podcast, Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry discussed his shooting motion in an engaging conversation with basketball legends LeBron James and Steve Nash. Beginning around the 8-minute mark, Curry offered valuable insight into what makes his shot effective.
"It helped me off the dribble," Curry stated, explaining his unconventional, yet effective, one-piece shooting technique. He emphasized that regardless of his balance or dribbling variations—whether he's shooting with his right or left hand—his shooting form allows him to release quickly without sacrificing power. The 6'3" guard expressed confidence in his ability to shoot over defenders, stating, "As long as I get them to drop their hands a little bit, I can get it up there quick, and I don't want to have any wasted motion."
LeBron & Nash Weigh In
LeBron James, who had the chance to observe Curry's shooting style closely while they were teammates on Team USA during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, described Curry's motion as "a flick." James noted that while most basketball players require a specific pocket to catch the ball, Curry has the unique ability to shoot quickly under varying conditions.
As an 11-time All-Star, two-time NBA MVP, and four-time NBA champion, Curry's shooting prowess is a central aspect of his legacy. With a record of 4,088 career three-pointers, he currently holds the title of the NBA's all-time leading three-point shooter.
The Importance of Technique
Despite his extraordinary talent, Curry stated that he wouldn’t necessarily teach young players to mirror his unique shooting style. Instead, he highlighted the more traditional textbook shot of his longtime Warriors teammate, Klay Thompson, who ranks fifth in NBA history with 2,707 three-pointers made. Thompson, a four-time NBA champion, sports a shooting technique that Curry feels is more suitable for newer players learning the game.
Curry's Continued Dominance
Even as he enters the later stages of his career, Curry is still a formidable force on the court, averaging 26.6 points, 4.4 assists, and 4.3 three-pointers per game this season. His continued performance ensures that the Warriors remain a strong contender in the playoff race within the competitive Western Conference.
