Carmelo Anthony Claps Back at Phil Jackson Over Troubled Knicks Tenure

Former Knicks Stars Reignite Tensions

Carmelo Anthony has expressed his dissatisfaction with Phil Jackson's comments in his new book, Masters of the Game: A Conversational History of the NBA in 75 Legendary Players. On the latest episode of the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, Anthony did not hold back, referring to Jackson's remarks as "some dumb s--t" during the discussion at the 40-minute mark.

Anthony discussed the challenges his teams faced while Jackson was Knicks president from 2014 to 2017. He criticized the poorly structured team rosters that were a product of Jackson's vision of implementing the triangle offense, a style he believes did not align with the modern game. "We were the laughing stock of the NBA for being in the triangle," Anthony said, emphasizing the difficulties he endured in that environment.

Clashing Perspectives on Team Structure

The tension between Jackson and Anthony was evident as the latter recalled his frustrations. "I had to fight that, and I had to take those bullets, not you, Phil Jackson," he stated. While Jackson expressed his discontent with Anthony's role, Anthony argued that Jackson should have addressed their issues directly rather than opting for indirect criticisms.

Jackson's tenure was highlighted by a lack of success, with the Knicks missing the playoffs in each of his three seasons and combining for only 80 wins. Despite this, Anthony managed to earn an All-Star nod in each of those years, averaging 22.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists. Yet, his performance was marred by an inconsistent roster, leading to ongoing struggles.

Unresolved Dynamics

Jackson's desire to trade Anthony was also revisited during the conversation, with the former coach revealing his thoughts during a meeting with Knicks governor James Dolan. He admitted, "Unfortunately, my relationship with Carmelo is kind of busted," which ultimately guided his decision to step down from his position.

Though both Jackson and Anthony are successful in their own rights, the partnership in New York did not yield the expected results. As time passes, the fallout from their time together continues to resurface, with Anthony seeking clarity and respect amid Jackson’s ongoing criticisms.
